Opa-Locka Community Development Corporation

About: The OLCDC has spent the past 36 years working to improve the quality of life in North Miami-Dade, recently attracting more than $83 million in resources to help transform the greater Opa-locka community. With these resources, OLCDC and partners are constructing and repairing homes, building parks and playgrounds, providing wellness programs, educating kids, and engaging residents. They also are using the arts to redesign the community’s streets and intersections, nurture community- and home-based businesses, and revive the area’s economic development through creative industry.

Mission statement: The OLCDC transforms under-resourced communities into vibrant, desirable, engaged neighborhoods by improving access to health, education, employment, art, safety and affordable housing.

Founder: Willie Logan lives and breathes Opa-Locka. His entire life’s work has been based in Opa-Locka, his home and where his heart, family, and friends are. In 1980, at the young age of 23, he became one of the youngest mayor’s in history. That same year, with the help of some other key community members, he began the Opa-Locka Community Development Corporation and has dedicated the past 35 years of his life to making improvements in the area and enriching the lives of the community members there.
